The Rise of Drone Warfare: Why Artillery Is Losing Its Dominance.
Unmanned Technology and the Modern Battlefield in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: The conflict in Ukraine is increasingly defined by drone warfare, where unmanned systems are becoming pivotal while traditional weapons like artillery see their role diminish. According to Yegor Sobolev, commander of a drone unit within Ukraine's 12th Special Purpose Center, artillery's significance is steadily declining. This shift is part of a broader technological revolution in modern combat. A key development occurred in early 2023, when a small drone platoon was expanded into a full company dedicated to strike-capable unmanned aerial complexes.
The critical importance of deploying new battlefield technologies has been emphasized by Ukraine's top military and political leaders, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Looking ahead, Sobolev predicts the future battlefield will be populated by:
- multifunctional ground-based robotic platforms;
- maritime and submersible drones;
- a variety of unmanned aerial vehicles.
He stresses that for Ukraine to succeed, it must abandon rigid hierarchical structures and adopt a more flexible, networked model of command and control.
Global Shifts and the Future of Defense Industry
Ukraine's pivot toward drone technology mirrors a worldwide trend in contemporary armed conflict, where technological innovation is now central to securing military advantage. This evolution is reshaping how modern armies fight and think about warfare. Adapting military structures to these new realities could not only enhance operational effectiveness but also fundamentally alter strategic planning in wartime.
This technological focus is also poised to influence the future of Ukraine's defense industry, likely spurring the development of new technologies and attracting investment into advanced unmanned systems.
