The incident occurred on the night of October 21 to 22, 2025, resulting in the closure of one of the largest airports in Lithuania. According to the National Crisis Management Center (NCKZ), the balloons that caused the air traffic stoppage were used to transport smuggled cigarettes.
Consequences and Comments
As of October 22, over 30 flights were canceled due to the flight restrictions, many of which remain canceled or delayed. The head of the National Crisis Response Center of Lithuania, Vilmantas Vitkauskas, described the 'situation with the weather balloons' from Belarus as a coordinated operation.
Flights were canceled at Vilnius Airport due to smuggled cigarettes being transported with balloons from Belarus. This incident had significant impacts on air traffic in the region, as flights had to be diverted or canceled throughout the day.
Similar smuggling incidents highlight new approaches in illegal goods trafficking, including the use of technologies. Addressing the problem requires coordinated collaboration between law enforcement and customs to prevent similar incidents in the future. Lithuanian authorities are expected to review security measures at airports to prevent a repeat of similar situations.
