Trump has imposed new tariffs for 67 countries: how this will affect Ukraine.
The White House has adopted new customs tariffs
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order introducing additional ad valorem rates for dozens of countries, the EU, and the Falkland Islands. According to the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Taxation, and Customs Policy, Danilo Getmantsev, attempts to evade the new tariffs will be punished.
Countries with the highest customs tariffs
The new ad valorem rates will apply to 67 countries, the EU, and the Falkland Islands. The highest tariff, 41%, is set for Syria. The list of countries with high tariffs also includes Laos, Myanmar, Switzerland, Iraq, Serbia, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Libya, and the Republic of South Africa.
- Laos and Myanmar — 40%
- Switzerland — 39%
- Iraq and Serbia — 35%
- Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Libya, Republic of South Africa — 30%
For some countries, including Brunei, India, Kazakhstan, Moldova, and Tunisia, the tariff will be 25%. The agreement does not cover China, Russia, and Belarus, which are taxed at a 10% ad valorem rate.
'The new customs tariffs will apply to countries that have not coordinated their actions with the US on issues of economy and national security,' — explained Danilo Getmantsev.
Violators who attempt to evade tariffs will be subject to an additional penalty of a 40% ad valorem rate.
Impact of Trump's tariffs on Ukraine
Cooperation between the US and the EU will not have a direct impact on Ukraine, noted the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee. The agreement between the parties will facilitate the procurement of American weapons for Ukraine and support from the EU in resolving the Ukrainian issue.
Ukrainians need to be cautious when crossing the border with Poland, as smuggled goods may be confiscated. Also, the EU is introducing the EES system to control individuals crossing the border.
In the recent decision by the White House to introduce new tariffs on dozens of countries, including the EU, one can see the efforts made by the US to strengthen its economic position and protect national interests. This agreement will not directly affect Ukraine, but it may have positive consequences in the context of enhancing cooperation between the US, the EU, and Ukraine, particularly in the fields of defense and security.Read also
