For the first time in Great Britain, the name Muhammad has become the most popular for boys.
For the first Time in Great Britain, the most popular name for boys has become Muhammad: it has been among the top 10 best names since 2016. This is evidenced by data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), reported by The Guardian.
This year, the name Muhammad surpassed the previous favorite among the British - Noah. Oliver ranked third in the list. Meanwhile, for girls, the most popular name remains Olivia for the 8th year in a row. Amelia and Isla took second and third places respectively.
It is noted that each year the Office for National Statistics in Great Britain analyzes new data on children's names, identifying the most popular and vice versa. The ranking was compiled based on the exact spelling of names indicated during birth registration: thus, similar names with different spelling variants were counted separately.
In recent years, three variants of the Arabic name Muhammad have made it to the top 100 most popular names for boys in Wales and England. However, in 2023 one of them topped the list.
Decrease in royal names
Last year, 4,661 Muhammad were born in Britain and Wales, compared to 4,177 in 2022. Mohammed ranked 28th with 1,601 registrations, while Mohammad ranked 68th with 835 children registered.
According to data, Muhammad was the most popular name among boys in four out of nine regions of England and the 63rd most popular in Wales.
On the other hand, Olivia was the most popular name among girls in five out of nine regions of England and first in Wales. Additionally, the name has been in the top 3 since 2006.
At the same time, the ranking of royal names has fallen in the country. In 2023, George ranked fourth with 3,494 registrations: the number of children who received this name fell below 4,000 for the first time in 10 years. William ranked 29th, Louis 45th, and Charlotte ranked 23rd in the list of most popular names for girls.
Increase in migration in Britain
It is worth noting that a new assessment of the number of immigrants, published on November 28 by the Office for National Statistics, forced leading politicians in the country to make loud statements and hold press conferences. It turned out that in the last two to three years, the population of Great Britain is growing by nearly a million people a year due to immigrants. This was reported by the BBC.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) announced that it has revised its estimate of the migration balance, which is the difference between those who arrived and those who left, and now believes that from June 2022 to June 2023, this balance amounted to 906,000 persons. Approximately 1.3 million people arrived in Britain, while 414,000 departed.
Thus, on Saturday, October 5, Great Britain recorded a new record for the number of migrants who illegally crossed the English Channel in small boats. That day, 17 boats carrying 973 people on board arrived at British shores.
