In the USA, arrests were made through recordings from police cameras: millions will lose their privacy.
The issue of publishing arrest videos
According to Vox: If you are arrested in America for a minor offense, such as speeding or unlawfully being in a certain place, the consequences from law enforcement may not be your worst problem. A few months later, you might see your arrest captured on video from a police camera, gaining millions of views on TikTok or YouTube. This video can quickly reach tens of millions of views, and your face will be alongside many others who were recently arrested, funded through social media. And it is unlikely that there will be a way to remove such videos.
These channels have become so popular that recently arrested individuals have started expressing concerns that their arrests could end up on such platforms.
“I literally have panic attacks about this,”said one person on Reddit.
“If my video is published, I would lose control.”
How arrest publication channels are formed
The basic structure of these channels is as follows: someone requests public records about police arrests, lightly edits the video by adding short texts or comments, and publishes it. Usually, various arrests are showcased on such channels: people who are drunk, yelling, evading the police, or resisting, as well as individuals arrested for theft or even murder.
The faces of the arrested individuals are almost always left unblurred. Many channels do not hide the names of the arrested, and in some cases, show the faces of witnesses and family members. This raises questions about the appropriateness of publishing such videos, as at the time of arrest, these individuals have not yet been convicted.
Conclusion and future plans
In Ukraine, this phenomenon may raise similar concerns and discussions, as technologies and social networks create new challenges for privacy and publicity.
“This tool, marketed to us as a means of police oversight, should not turn into a way to shame random citizens,”noted Adam Schwartz from the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
In today's world, the issue of balancing transparency and privacy is becoming increasingly relevant, requiring new approaches and effective mechanisms to protect citizens' personal information. It is important to find ways that not only ensure the transparency of law enforcement but also protect the dignity of those who find themselves in difficult situations.
