Dniester Water Pollution Incident

According to Novyny.live: Localized water contamination has been detected in the Dniester River and the Dniester Estuary in the Odesa region, following a combined missile and drone strike by the Russian Federation targeting the Dniester Hydroelectric Power Plant. Elevated concentrations of phosphates and petroleum products have been recorded as a result. Environmental authorities are closely monitoring the situation to contain the spread of pollutants.

Extent of Pollution and Response Measures

The pollution patches measure approximately 6 meters in length and up to 70 meters in width. To prevent further dispersion of contaminants, boom barriers have been deployed along the riverbed and near Odesa's water intake channel. This action is critical for safeguarding water resources and ensuring public safety in the region.

Concerns also extend to the condition of the Repida lock dam at the 97th kilometer of the Danube River. The protective covering on the riverbank slope has been compromised, and the dam's surface is damaged over a stretch of about 60 meters. The dam berm, which is 11 meters wide, has experienced erosion affecting 8 meters of its width. These issues heighten risks to both the ecosystem and the nearly 100,000 people who rely on water from artesian wells in the area.

  • Nearly 100,000 individuals depend on these wells for their water supply.
  • Technical oil contamination has also been identified in the Dniester waters, with effects reaching Moldova, where authorities have intensified efforts to manage oil pollution in the river.

Environmental agencies continue to monitor the situation closely, aiming to implement necessary measures to improve water quality and protect public health.

This incident underscores the critical need for rigorous water quality monitoring in rivers, as pollution can have severe impacts on human health and the broader ecosystem.

Environmental Expert

Amid the ongoing war and persistent threats such as missile attacks, ensuring adequate protection of water resources and responding swiftly to potential environmental disasters is essential. Cooperation between Ukraine and its neighboring countries is also vital for addressing water pollution issues that may have transboundary consequences.
