Kyiv Metro's Mysterious Hum: A Driver Explains the Source of the Noise.
The Mysterious Hum in Metro Carriages
According to Novyny.live: Passengers on the Kyiv Metro have recently reported a loud humming sound inside the carriages. A metro driver has clarified that the noise originates from the auxiliary power unit, which contains a transformer converting 825 volts of direct current into 220 volts. This conversion is essential for powering the carriage lighting and the train's control circuits. Such technical systems are standard in railway operations, ensuring the train's basic functions.
According to reports, this hum is particularly noticeable to passengers traveling on the Obolonsko-Teremkivska line, especially near the terminal station 'Heroiv Dnipra'. Similar technology is employed in metro systems worldwide. For instance, Israel's 'Carmel' line, which has 4 carriages and 6 stations, operates on comparable principles. A journey on this line lasts 8 minutes, with an elevation difference of 274 meters between the first and last stations.
Transport Updates and Infrastructure
A ride on the Carmel metro costs 7 shekels, roughly equivalent to 1 euro. It operates from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on weekdays, and from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. on weekends. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, a new station named 'Mostytska' is slated to open this year in Kyiv. These infrastructure developments are generating significant interest among the city's residents and visitors, highlighting ongoing urban transit evolution.
Therefore, despite the minor inconvenience of the humming sound, Kyiv residents can be assured the phenomenon is normal and stems from the technical operation of the metro system.
Essentially, it's a transformer converting 825 volts of direct current into 220 volts. This is done so there is lighting in the carriage and to power the train's control circuits, the driver noted, explaining the nature of the sound now familiar to passengers of the capital's metro.
This situation underscores the importance of technical maintenance and infrastructure modernization, which ensure safe and comfortable passenger transport. While new stations like 'Mostytska' aim to improve transport accessibility, the need for technological solutions that keep the system running remains a priority for the Kyiv Metro's development.
