Russian Ballistic Missile Threat to Ukraine Set to Escalate by 2026: Cities at Risk.
Escalating Russian Ballistic Missile Threat
According to TSN.ua: The risk of Russian ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine is projected to increase significantly by 2026, potentially leading to new strikes on key urban centers. According to an analysis by the American Institute for the Study of War, a series of Russian attacks on March 6-7 of this year involved a higher-than-usual number of ballistic missiles. President Vladimir Putin favors ballistic missile production due to their simpler guidance systems. Most Russian ballistic missiles have a range of 500 km, with the exceptions being the 'Kinzhal' and the Kh-22 aeroballistic missile.
Expert Oleh Zhdanov states that Russia has the capacity to manufacture between 50 and 70 ballistic missiles per month.
"There is data suggesting somewhere around 50 to 70 per month,"he noted. He also indicated that the Russian Federation currently maintains a stockpile of approximately one thousand missiles of various types, which it considers its untouched reserve.
"The Russians keep about a thousand missiles of various types in their warehouses,"Zhdanov added.
Potential Target Cities and Regions
Kyiv and surrounding areas are at particular risk of renewed ballistic missile assaults. Zhdanov warned,
"Kyiv could be under threat from ballistic missiles launched from two locations—the Kursk and Belgorod regions."The cities and regions identified as potential targets for these missiles include:
- Kyiv
- Cherkasy Oblast
- Kirovohrad Oblast
- Kyiv Oblast
- Mykolaiv Oblast
- Odesa
Amid heightened global tensions, including in the Middle East, former U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that conflict in that region could persist until September 2026. Oleh Zhdanov has expressed concern over a potential shortage of air defense interceptors, stating,
"I think we may face a severe deficit of anti-missile systems,"which underscores the growing urgency of the Russian ballistic threat. The security situation remains tense, with Ukrainian cities likely targets for future attacks. This evolving threat comes as Ukraine continues to seek enhanced air defense capabilities from its Western partners.
Reports of increased Russian ballistic missile production and their potential use against Ukrainian urban centers point to a deteriorating security environment in the region. Analysts believe preparations for new offensives could be linked to further military actions, with serious potential consequences for civilian populations. It is critical for Ukrainian military and diplomatic circles to account for these factors to mount a timely response to the emerging dangers.
