Snow blockade in western Ukraine: rescuers free cars from snowdrifts

According to ТСН: On January 8, movement on the highways in the western regions of Ukraine was complicated due to heavy snow and ice. Witnesses recorded on video how cars were stuck in the snow and stand in long traffic jams. Rescuers are already helping to free transport from snowdrifts.

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and various Telegram channels.

Situation on the roads of Lviv, Ternopil, and Rivne regions

According to information from social networks, traffic on the Lviv-Ternopil highway has practically stopped due to the snowstorm. Traffic jams are forming and accidents are occurring.

In Lviv, residents are urged to limit car trips.

“A request to the residents. If possible, do not use private cars. Reschedule meetings, inform your manager that you will be late,”

— urged the mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi.

The State Emergency Service also reported complications in movement on the roads due to bad weather. Rescuers are assisting people in various regions.

For example, in the Rivne region on the Kyiv-Chop highway, rescuers are freeing cars from snowdrifts. In the Stryi district of Lviv region, they helped medics reach a patient in the village of Slavske, as the ambulance could not overcome a steep climb due to the slippery road.

Traffic restrictions in Ivano-Frankivsk region

The police of the Ivano-Frankivsk region warned drivers about traffic restrictions on January 8 due to adverse weather conditions. Restrictions were introduced from 8:00 a.m. on a section of the R-21 Dolyna-Khust highway — from the village of Shevchenkove of the Vygodsk Territorial Community to the Torun Pass.

The number of police patrols on the highways of Prykarpattia has been increased to monitor the situation, assist drivers, and support communal workers.

Emergency Service units are working round the clock and are ready to respond to emergencies. Rescuers also urge caution in bad weather.

Advice for drivers from the Emergency Service regarding snowfall

Avoid long trips unless absolutely necessary. If you must travel, make sure you have the following in your trunk:

  • a shovel and a tow rope to get free from a snow trap;

  • winter windshield washer and a full tank of fuel to warm the cabin in case of a stop;

  • reflective vests — a vest will make you visible to other drivers in a snowstorm;

  • emergency supplies — a thermos with tea, a blanket or an emergency blanket;

  • communication means — a power bank and offline maps.

“If you see a warning about a snowstorm or ice — stay home,”

— emphasized the Emergency Service.

Additionally, the day before, a yellow level of danger was announced in Ukraine due to heavy snowfall, ice, and fog, which caused transportation collapse and an increase in injuries. It is known that in Rivne region, rescuers carried a patient with a stroke to the ambulance through snowdrifts, and in Zhytomyr region, they freed a bus with 15 passengers from a snow trap. A total of 185 traffic accidents were recorded across the country. In Lviv, traffic jams and the stalling of electric transport continue to be observed, and forecasters predict an intensification of frost and new snowstorms.
