Draft law on multiple citizenship. The World Congress of Ukrainians explained what needs to be changed.
The Ukrainian Congress of Ukrainians joyfully welcomed the news about the first reading of the draft law on multiple citizenship in Ukraine, but noted that this law needs changes. The Congress believes that these changes are necessary to protect the interests of Ukraine and all citizens.
Main aspects that require changes:
- Equality before the law. Every citizen has equal rights and obligations, regardless of their status.
- Nationality restrictions. Defining a limited list of countries whose citizenship can be combined with Ukrainian citizenship. This list should not include states that threaten the security of Ukraine.
- Requirements for citizenship. Candidates for Ukrainian citizenship must confirm their loyalty to Ukraine, knowledge of the Ukrainian language, history, and the rights of a citizen.
The Congress is ready to cooperate with the Verkhovna Rada to consider these proposals in the draft law. They emphasize that these changes are necessary to ensure fairness, security, and legislative effectiveness, as well as to protect the interests of Ukraine and Ukrainians abroad.
The Congress notes that the adoption of the draft law is a significant step towards Ukraine's integration into the European Union and recognition of the diversity of the Ukrainian community.
Quote: 'For many years, the Congress has supported the adoption of similar legislation, as it understood its importance for enhancing Ukraine's international presence and protecting the rights of Ukrainians abroad. This law will allow us to preserve our Ukrainian heritage and identity, as well as promote the development of both the country of residence and Ukraine,' representatives of the unions stated.
On December 17, the Verkhovna Rada supported the draft law on the introduction of multiple citizenship in Ukraine. The recommendations of the World Congress of Ukrainians and the questions of the Constitutional Court regarding the law were taken into account.
