Zaporizhzhia NPP without power: what the disconnection from the energy system threatens.
According to inkorr.com: Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been isolated from the Ukrainian energy system for six days due to occupation by Russian troops. In the absence of external power supply, the safe operation of the plant is ensured by backup diesel generators. This was reported by the head of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate, Oleg Korikov.
Threat to nuclear security
Korikov noted that the lack of electricity supply poses a serious threat to nuclear and radiation safety. He emphasized that such a situation could have significant consequences, calling on the occupiers to assist in restoring the connection of the plant to the energy system. If the diesel fuel reserves are depleted, the risk of an accident could significantly affect not only Ukraine but also neighboring European countries.
As the official stated, there is no guarantee that the reserves of diesel fuel at the site will last long, which could lead to serious problems with the plant's safety systems. Time will tell how long they will suffice for normal operations.
Urgent actions are necessary
Overall, the situation with the isolation of Zaporizhzhia NPP from the energy system is a serious threat to the safety of both Ukraine and Europe. Urgent steps are required to address this issue to avoid potential catastrophic consequences.
The situation surrounding Zaporizhzhia NPP continues to raise international concern. Experts are calling for active measures to eliminate the risks associated with the energy isolation of the nuclear plant, as the situation could impact stability in the region. The coming days will be crucial for formulating a plan of action to improve safety at the facility.
