Founder of AI Geoffrey Hinton's Warning: How Technologies Can Cause Social Collapse.
According to ТСН: Renowned artificial intelligence specialist Geoffrey Hinton expressed the view that the rapid development of AI, controlled by technology billionaires, could lead to serious social and economic problems.
Hinton made these statements during a discussion with U.S. senator Bernie Sanders at Georgetown University, emphasizing his concern about the reckless implementation of new technologies without appropriate safeguards.
Key Concerns of Hinton
Labor Market: There is a risk that AI could significantly change the structure of jobs, replacing people in many professions without creating new opportunities.
Social Inequality: There is a likelihood that this could greatly exacerbate economic and social inequality.
Geopolitics: The potential use of AI by powerful countries for 'bloodless invasions' could alter the global balance of power.
Hinton emphasizes that the current AI revolution is different from previous technological changes in that it does not create new jobs to compensate for losses.
'People who lose their jobs will have nowhere to go if AI becomes as intelligent as humans, or even smarter. Any job they could do could be done by AI,'he noted.
He also points out the economic implications: technological magnates like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg may not have considered that the loss of jobs on a massive scale would reduce the number of consumers as well.
Moreover, Hinton predicts that the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), capable of performing a wide range of tasks and adapting to different situations, could occur within the next 20 years or even sooner.
Hinton, who laid the foundations of modern AI, received the Turing Award in 2018 for his work on neural networks, which he shared with Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun. In 2023, he left Google.
Thus, Hinton's expressed concerns highlight the importance of a cautious approach to the implementation of new technologies. In particular, there is a call for the development of strategies that will minimize negative consequences for the labor market and social structure. In light of his views, it is important to have an open dialogue about the responsibilities of technology companies and to ensure that innovations serve the betterment of society as a whole.
