Zelenskyy Orders Defense Ministry to Bolster Energy Security Following Russian Strikes.
Ukraine's Energy Sector Under Pressure
According to Novyny.live: Following a series of Russian attacks, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued directives to the Ministry of Defense. These orders came during his daily security briefing, which focused on the urgent situation within Ukraine's energy infrastructure and measures to enhance its protection. The meeting specifically addressed how to improve the security of energy facilities in the wake of recent strikes.
On February 5, 2023, Russian forces launched 183 attack drones, approximately 110 of which were 'Shahed' models. These coordinated assaults have created a severe heating crisis, particularly in the capital. Currently, over 1,100 apartment buildings in Kyiv remain without heat, causing significant distress for residents. Critical heating shortages also persist in several other regions:
- Kyiv Oblast
- Dnipro Oblast
- Poltava Oblast
- Chernihiv Oblast
- Sumy Oblast
- Zaporizhzhia
- Donetsk Oblast
In response to this crisis, the state-owned company Naftogaz of Ukraine has distributed more than 20,000 'warmth kits' containing essential supplies to support affected citizens. The company plans to deliver over 100,000 such aid packages, highlighting the scale of the humanitarian effort required during this energy emergency. These attacks are part of a wider Russian strategy to target civilian infrastructure during winter.
"First, we need additional reinforcement in countering Russian reconnaissance drones. Second, we must continue to apply all methods of defense against rocket artillery and, accordingly, strike Russian positions. I expect results on this from the Ministry of Defense and the command of the Armed Forces."
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
This situation underscores the critical efforts of the Ukrainian government to ensure energy security and support its population amid ongoing aggression. The strategic decisions made at the state level are vital for mitigating the impact of the attacks and improving living conditions for citizens affected by the energy crisis. Further steps to strengthen both defensive capabilities and energy infrastructure will be crucial in countering these external threats.
