Ukrainian President Holds Talks with US Senators

According to Novyny.live: On February 16 in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with US Senators Richard Blumenthal and Sheldon Whitehouse. The discussions focused on several critical issues, including:

  • Imposing stronger sanctions on Russia's shadow tanker fleet;
  • Providing energy support to Ukraine;
  • Repatriating abducted children;
  • The current situation on the front lines.

The Critical Role of Sanctions and International Support

During talks on sanctions, President Zelenskyy stressed the necessity for the United States to work closely with the European Union.

“It is crucial that the United States actively cooperates with the European Union not only to detain tankers from Russia's shadow fleet but also to confiscate the oil they are transporting,” the President stated.
He emphasized that sanctions remain a primary tool for exerting pressure on Russia: “This is very important for us. We do not see many other tools to influence Putin, to pressure Russia, to stop this war. The number one tool is the sanctions policy.”

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the United States for its assistance to Ukraine's energy sector, which is vital for the country's resilience. The meeting also addressed the urgent issue of returning abducted Ukrainian children. It was noted that more than 1,800 children have already been brought back from Russia, marking a significant step toward restoring justice and protecting children's rights. This meeting underscores Ukraine's continued diplomatic efforts to secure international backing, particularly on matters of security and human rights, as the conflict persists. Cooperation with the US and the EU is seen as pivotal for strengthening Ukraine's position against Russian aggression and delivering justice for affected families.
