Zelensky on compromise with Russia: pressure from partners is essential.
According to ТСН: The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed his position regarding signals of Russia's readiness for compromise, emphasizing that pressure from partners is necessary for this. He also confirmed that due to the expansion of the agenda, there were changes in the composition of the Ukrainian negotiating team.
These details were shared by the president during an online Q&A with journalists.
With the arrival of Jared Kushner's team to the American side and the addition of an economic component to the negotiations, the Ukrainian negotiating group was expanded.
“Several groups from the economic sector joined us, including representatives from the Ministry of Economy and the Prime Minister of Ukraine. They have become part of the negotiating group,” the president noted.
The agenda of the negotiations
The agenda includes:
A framework 20-point plan.
Recovery of Ukraine (economic plan).
Security guarantees after the end of the war and a ceasefire.
Regarding the security component, representatives from development and Chief of Staff Andriy Ihnatov were also included in the negotiations.
The president noted that there is currently no direct dialogue with the Russian side. With the American side, according to Zelensky, it is discussing Russia's “signals, statements, steps, readiness or unpreparedness.”
Furthermore, Ukraine is discussing not only bilateral relations and security guarantees with the USA, but also the reaction to Russian signals.
“Regarding compromises with the Russian side: in any case, if America puts pressure, if partners put pressure, and if America wants to end this war, as they demonstrate today at a high level, I believe that Russia must make compromises,”
summed up Volodymyr Zelensky.
The president also explained what conditions and prospects could be in future security guarantees for Ukraine in the context of peace negotiations. He noted that one of the initial priorities of the country was joining NATO, however, full support from allies was not there at that moment.
Currently, bilateral security guarantees between Ukraine and the USA are being discussed, which will resemble the provisions of Article 5, as well as guarantees from European partners, Canada, and Japan. According to the president, these guarantees should protect Ukraine from renewed Russian aggression and already today represent a certain compromise from the Ukrainian side.
