On Invasion Anniversary, Zelenskyy Reveals His Early-War Bunker Beneath the Presidential Office.
Four Years Since the Full-Scale Invasion
According to Novyny.live: Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, a date that irrevocably altered the nation's history. At around 5:00 a.m. that day, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of his 'special military operation.' During the initial months of the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and hundreds of others worked from a bunker beneath the Presidential Office complex. This conflict has become the largest land war in Europe since World War II.
Describing the bunker's conditions, Zelenskyy noted the air temperature was approximately 20°C (68°F).
"I worked here, then I would go upstairs to address the nation. Our entire team, the government, was here—daily meetings with the military, phone calls, searching for solutions. Everything necessary for Ukraine to survive,"the President stated.
On the fourth anniversary of the invasion, Zelenskyy shared memories from the bunker, including a pivotal call from U.S. President Joe Biden.
"It was here that I spoke with U.S. President Joe Biden and heard him say: 'Volodymyr, there is a threat. You need to leave Ukraine urgently. We are ready to help you with that,'"he recounted. This moment underscores the immense pressure and peril Ukraine faced in the war's earliest days.
Zelenskyy also reflected that
"even in this long tunnel, you could not contain a millionth part of the pain Ukraine has endured in this time. The pain that Russia has brought to every one of our families, to every Ukrainian heart."These words convey the profound suffering the Ukrainian people have experienced over four years of brutal conflict.
Marking this solemn day, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv, a significant gesture of continued international solidarity. The fourth anniversary serves as a moment to reflect on Ukraine's past, its ongoing struggle, and its future as it continues to fight for its independence and sovereignty.
International Support and Ongoing Challenges
The fourth anniversary highlights not only the war's tragic toll on Ukraine but also the critical importance of sustained international backing. This support remains vital for Ukraine's defense of its territorial integrity. Von der Leyen's visit to Kyiv signals that the international community stands with Ukraine, which will be crucial for the country's strategic position moving forward.
This day also calls for remembrance of the immense challenges Ukraine continues to face and underscores the enduring necessity of the fight for freedom.
