Zelenskyy Criticizes Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán

According to TSN.ua: During a joint press conference with European leaders in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for his attempts to block a €90 billion loan for Ukraine and for demanding the restoration of Russian oil transit. Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia bears sole responsibility for the destruction of the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline. This dispute highlights ongoing tensions within the EU over support for Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russian aggression.

The Ukrainian president stressed that the issues of financial aid and the pipeline are entirely separate.

“Russia itself destroyed the pipeline,”
he stated. Zelenskyy argued that if Hungary intends to block financial support, it should target Russia, not Ukraine.
“So if they want to block financial support, they should block Russia, because Ukraine is not the cause of the pipeline's destruction,”
the president said.

An Appeal for International Solidarity

In this context, Zelenskyy also suggested Orbán should speak directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin. 'Perhaps about an energy ceasefire or something similar,' he added. This pointed remark underscores Russia's cynical use of energy as a weapon and the need for unified European action to address such threats.

Furthermore, President Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine possesses evidence, including satellite imagery, confirming that Russian military forces were responsible for damaging the pipeline infrastructure. This information underscores the severity of the situation and the necessity for collective efforts to support Ukraine.

The confrontation with Hungary is significant for understanding Kyiv's relations with Budapest and for broader EU policy on supporting Ukraine during the war. Orbán's opposition could impact the crucial financial assistance Ukraine needs amid its ongoing economic crisis. Zelenskyy's statements highlight the vital importance of international solidarity in countering aggression and the need for joint action to ensure energy security in the region.
