Ukraine's Power Grid Under Attack

According to Novyny.live: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has provided an update on Ukraine's electricity situation following a massive Russian assault on the nation's energy infrastructure overnight on February 7. The attack involved over 400 Russian drones, a significant portion of which were 'Shahed' models, alongside the launch of nearly 40 missiles of various types. This barrage forced a reduction in power generation at nuclear power plant units. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign to cripple Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, particularly during the winter months.

The hostile strike caused one nuclear power unit to shut down automatically, exacerbating the existing power supply issues. Zelenskyy stated that this represents yet another large-scale Russian attack, which continues despite ongoing diplomatic efforts at various levels. He emphasized that:

"No terrorist in the world has ever allowed themselves this level of strikes."

Zelenskyy also stressed that Russia must face a global response for its actions.

Aid for Affected Regions

To provide assistance to the hardest-hit areas, the President has instructed the government and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to ensure necessary support for the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions. Zelenskyy also noted that repair and emergency crews are mobilized nationwide, working to restore the damaged energy infrastructure.

He simultaneously highlighted the difficult situation on roads in southern regions and within municipal services, stating that aid must be provided to overcome these challenges.

This bombardment of energy facilities reflects the ongoing tension in Ukrainian-Russian relations and underscores Russia's strategy of destabilizing Ukraine. Restoring the power system and supporting affected regions remain critical tasks for the Ukrainian government, especially in winter conditions. Prolonged attacks and infrastructure damage could have long-term consequences for the country's energy security and its overall economy.
