Poland Reacts as Zelenskyy Proposes National Pantheon Law and Introduces New Order.
Draft Law on Establishing a National Pantheon
According to Espreso.tv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has submitted a bill to create a National Pantheon, continuing efforts to honor Ukrainian heroes. This follows the decision to name a military unit after the 'UPA heroes.' The legislation was introduced on June 28 and passed by the Verkhovna Rada on July 1. The bill also includes the establishment of a new state award—the Order of Europe.
Statements from Polish Politicians
In response to these developments, former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who served from 2017 to 2023, made his stance clear. He returned the Ukrainian Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise to a museum dedicated to victims of the Volyn tragedy. Morawiecki stated:
“Let this award serve there as a symbol of remembrance for the tens of thousands of innocent Poles brutally killed during the Volyn massacre.” - Mateusz Morawiecki
Polish President Karol Nawrocki also weighed in, declaring that he would revoke the Order of the White Eagle from Zelenskyy. Nawrocki's office emphasized that his 'firm defense of Polish interests is justified.'
These events highlight the strained relations between Ukraine and Poland, which remain tense due to historical disputes, particularly surrounding the Volyn tragedy. Honoring historical figures and events is a key part of national identity for both countries, but it can also lead to conflicting interpretations of history. The continuation of these processes may impact bilateral ties, especially amid current political and social challenges.
