Zelenskyy Refuses to Call Trump a Friend, Contrasting His Bond with Macron.
How Volodymyr Zelenskyy Builds Ties with World Leaders
According to TSN.ua: In an interview with France Inter radio, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he cannot describe Donald Trump as a friend, unlike French President Emmanuel Macron, whom he considers a close ally. This remark highlights a clear distinction in how Zelenskyy relates to the two leaders. The comments come amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and Ukraine's continued reliance on Western support.
Zelenskyy described his relationship with Trump as 'a bit more complicated.' Speaking about his friendship with Macron, he said:
“He is my friend because we are living through this time together, you know”. The Ukrainian leader also pointed to differences in age and attitude:
“Maybe because he is older. Maybe because he treats me like a son”.
Ukraine’s Strategic Priorities
Zelenskyy emphasized that his role as president requires him to defend his country's interests, which inevitably shapes how he interacts with foreign leaders. These words reflect his drive to strengthen alliances with those who stand by Ukraine during its most difficult challenges.
This statement likely goes beyond personal rapport, pointing instead to Ukraine’s strategic calculations on the global stage. Amid an ongoing war and serious geopolitical hurdles, the value of reliable partners like Macron is especially high. The more strained dynamic with Trump may hint at the unpredictability of future U.S. foreign policy. Ultimately, Zelenskyy’s stance could play a major role in shaping Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts to secure continued international backing.
