Zelensky on elections: how Ukraine is preparing for voting abroad.
According to ТСН: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working on creating the necessary infrastructure abroad to organize elections.
This was announced by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky during a briefing in Kyiv with the Prime Minister of Portugal Luis Montenegro.
Security and legislation as the basis of elections
"Elections depend on two things: security and legislation. It is not Putin's place to decide when and in what format they will take place,"the president emphasized. He noted that security is a key condition for the possibility of voting, and therefore elections cannot be held in temporarily occupied territories.
Honest and transparent elections
Volodymyr Zelensky also noted Ukraine's readiness to ensure honest and transparent elections with international observers and the possibility of voting abroad. Since many Ukrainians are outside the country, this process may be complicated, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively working on its implementation.
"It is important that all citizens have the opportunity to vote, including military personnel at the front. This is a basic right that the state must guarantee,"
Discussion of election security
The president also noted that the issue of election security is being discussed with international partners, including the United States. One possible option is a ceasefire or the end of the war, even if only for the duration of the elections.
Recall that in early December, in an interview with Politico, US President Donald Trump expressed the need to conduct presidential elections in Ukraine, noting that Kyiv "is using the war to avoid holding elections."
Previously, the Central Election Commission stressed the impossibility of conducting elections without changing the legislation.
Therefore, organizing elections in Ukraine is on the agenda, and the country's authorities are making efforts to hold them even under difficult security conditions. Guarantees of security and the determination of government authorities to work with international partners will be crucial in this process, as elections are an important element of Ukraine's democratic development. The outcomes of these efforts will determine how citizens can exercise their right to vote, even abroad and in the most dangerous conditions.
