Zelenskyy Warns: Russian Aggression Will Escalate Regardless of Ukrainian Withdrawal.
Statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
According to TSN.ua: In an interview with Rai Italia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the world not to trust Russia's intentions regarding Donbas. He argued that Russian aggression would intensify even if Ukrainian forces were to withdraw from the region, a scenario he deemed unacceptable for Ukraine. Zelenskyy stressed that in such a case, Russia would maintain a military force of between 300,000 and one million soldiers on the border. This warning comes amid a protracted conflict in Eastern Ukraine that has claimed thousands of lives since 2014.
The Critical Need for Concrete Peace Terms
Zelenskyy also emphasized the crucial importance of the conditions under which Ukraine could discuss peace.
"The terms must be such that we do not simply believe or rely on Russia's words,"he stated. The President believes that despite all past promises from Russia, its aggression has only increased.
"It is pure madness,"he underscored, commenting on the potential retreat of Ukrainian troops.
Zelenskyy questioned the basis for trusting Russia, asking: "Why should we suddenly believe them and hand over such gifts?" This reflects his profound concern over Russia's future actions in the region. He noted that if Ukraine were to leave Donbas, the war would not end, and he called for maintaining resilience and determination in the fight for the country's territorial integrity.
President Zelenskyy's statements highlight the escalating tension in relations between Ukraine and Russia, particularly within the context of the Donbas conflict. They reflect Ukraine's refusal of any potential compromise that Russian leadership might propose and point to the necessity of continued international support for ensuring security and stability in the region. The situation remains complex, and the subsequent steps taken by both sides could significantly impact the conflict's trajectory and prospects for peace in Ukraine.
