Zelenskyy Seeks Firm EU Accession Timeline, Downplays 2027 as a Deadline

Ukraine's EU Membership Bid

According to Novyny.live: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that while Ukraine is not rigidly insisting on 2027 as its accession year, it requires a definitive date for the formal start of membership negotiations. The 2027 timeframe, he noted, had previously been discussed in the context of security guarantees for Ukraine. Zelenskyy urged European nations to elevate the accession talks and intensify economic pressure on Russia. This push for clarity comes as Ukraine continues its reforms under the extraordinary pressure of a full-scale war.

'The fact that this has not yet happened is unfair. We are implementing these reforms while at war. We can achieve more during wartime than other candidate nations can in peacetime.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The President emphasized that delays in the accession process are unjust. He also warned that without a clear target date for Ukraine's EU entry, Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin, would seek to obstruct the decision: 'Without a clear date for Ukraine's accession to the EU, Putin will try to block this decision.'

Zelenskyy's statement marks a critical juncture in the EU integration talks, highlighting not only Ukraine's drive toward European standards but also the urgent need for security assurances amid Russian aggression. The call for a concrete timeline for negotiations underscores the heightened regional tensions and the intensifying international diplomatic efforts to support Ukraine's European aspirations.
