Zelenskyy: Russia Would Need a Minimum of Two Years to Seize Donbas.
Zelenskyy Assesses Russia's Donbas Ambitions
According to Novyny.live: In an interview with the French television channel 'France 2' on February 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia would require at least two years to capture the Donbas region. He added, however, that he believes the aggressor nation lacks the stamina to sustain such a prolonged effort. This assessment comes as Ukraine continues its defense against a full-scale invasion that began in 2022.
Zelenskyy emphasized that since the war's outset, Russia has failed to secure any decisive victory. He pointed out that any attempt to conquer eastern Ukraine would come at an immense human cost for Russia, specifically predicting the loss of:
- 800,000 soldiers killed.
The President also noted that if the front lines were to freeze in their current positions, with Ukraine holding its ground, such an outcome would already constitute a significant concession on Ukraine's part.
The Ongoing Conflict in Donbas
Consequently, the situation in Donbas remains highly tense, with forecasts of Russia's future actions causing considerable concern among observers.
President Zelenskyy's statement underscores the complexity of the military situation in eastern Ukraine and the potential consequences for Russia if it continues its aggression. The staggering casualties that, in the President's view, would accompany attempts to seize the Donbas could become a factor influencing Moscow's strategic decisions. Nevertheless, given the conflict's duration and its impact on both sides, the situation remains dynamic and demands close attention from the international community.
