Zelensky’s Exposé on 'Shahed' Drone Technology

According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has disclosed that Iran is using 'Shahed' drones equipped with Russian-made components to carry out attacks across the Middle East. He highlighted the deepening military collaboration between Tehran and Moscow, which is fueling the expanded deployment of these unmanned aerial vehicles in the region. This revelation comes amid ongoing global concerns over the transfer of advanced weaponry between the two nations.

Speaking before the British Parliament on March 17, 2023, Zelensky underscored the urgency of the matter. He explained that Iran has begun producing upgraded versions of the 'Shahed' drones. At the onset of the full-scale war, Russia acquired these drones from Iran to target critical infrastructure. Zelensky emphasized that

“Iran trained the Russians on how to launch them, provided the technology to manufacture them inside Russia, and shared methods for their modernization.”

The president also noted that Ukraine has already developed effective countermeasures against these drones. He remarked that 'there is now close cooperation between Iran and Russia.' Earlier, Zelensky had stated that Russia received thousands of attack drones from Iran, including the 'Shahed' model, confirming the deep ties between the two countries in the realm of military technology.

Global Cooperation Needed to Counter Emerging Threats

Zelensky’s statements underscore the critical need for international collaboration to address new threats arising from the close partnerships among states that enable aggression. The use of 'Shahed' drones not only illustrates the military alliance between Russia and Iran but also endangers the security of other nations in the region. This could have serious repercussions for international relations and stability across the Middle East.
