President Zelenskyy Holds Emergency Meeting as Fuel Prices Surge in Ukraine.
What We Know About Ukraine's Rising Fuel Costs
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has convened a special meeting to address the sharp increase in prices for gasoline and diesel. The primary goal for officials and market participants is to guarantee stable fuel supplies despite the current price volatility. This situation is part of a broader global energy market trend affecting many countries.
Serhiy Korietskiy, Chairman of the Board of NJSC 'Naftogaz of Ukraine', noted that gasoline prices have risen by approximately 6 hryvnias. This spike coincides with heightened tensions in the Middle East, which are impacting global oil product markets. Energy expert Dmytro Liovushkin warned that if the Strait of Hormuz were to be blocked, gasoline prices in Ukraine could potentially reach 100–150 hryvnias per liter.
“This is not just a Ukrainian problem, but a European and global one.”
Serhiy Korietskiy
Korietskiy further emphasized that 'the main objective for the state and market players is to prevent any disruptions in the supply of oil products'. During this crisis period, he assured that 'we will minimize our markup as much as possible—to the extent that it covers our costs'.
The price surge has also raised concerns among other industry analysts. Serhiy Kuyun pointed out that 'such price growth is not typical for this time of year and is primarily linked to the geopolitical situation'. Danylo Hetmantsev also stressed that fuel companies should not raise prices without objective reasons.
The Geopolitical Impact
The rising cost of gasoline in Ukraine reflects a complex geopolitical landscape that is influencing not only the domestic market but also global oil prices. Government officials and market participants are attempting to strike a balance between maintaining supply stability and controlling prices to avoid negative social consequences. Future developments, including potential shifts in international policy, could significantly affect Ukraine's fuel price situation.
