Zelenskyy Calls Out Putin's False Claim About Kostiantynivka Capture and Challenges Him to a Meeting.
Statement from Ukraine's President
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin's assertion that Russian forces have taken control of Kostiantynivka. Zelenskyy labeled the claim a fabrication, calling it another instance of Russian disinformation. He went on to propose a face-to-face meeting in Kostiantynivka itself, but Putin turned down the offer.
According to Zelenskyy, 'Putin decided to lie to the world and the American president about the situation on the front line: he claims that the Russians have supposedly captured Kostiantynivka in Donbas. Of course, that’s not true—it’s just another Russian lie meant to generate some kind of headline.'
These remarks underscore the Ukrainian leader's stance on the misinformation being spread by Russia.
Russia's Position
Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, stated that the Russian president is only willing to hold talks in Moscow. He emphasized, 'We want to remind everyone that Putin has expressed readiness to receive him in Moscow. After all, Moscow is the capital of Russia, not Kostiantynivka.' This indicates that Russia's willingness to engage in dialogue is limited to its own capital.
The dispute over Kostiantynivka has sparked fresh diplomatic tensions between Ukraine and Russia, highlighting the complexity of the current political landscape. No meeting between the two leaders took place, underscoring the ongoing strain in bilateral relations. This incident serves as another example of the persistent friction between the two nations amid the ongoing military conflict and information war.
Both leaders' statements reflect a deep lack of trust and complicated diplomatic ties that hinder progress toward a peaceful resolution. Future actions from either side could shape developments in the region and influence the international community's response to the conflict.
