Zelenskyy's Visit to Romania

According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis held a press conference on March 12, 2023, during a visit focused on strategic energy cooperation. The leaders discussed a partnership centered on supplying American liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Ukraine and utilizing Ukraine's substantial underground gas storage facilities. This meeting underscores the regional push to diversify energy sources away from Russian supplies.

President Zelenskyy highlighted the critical importance of American LNG for Ukraine's energy security, stating:

“American liquefied gas is important for Ukraine.”
He also emphasized the urgent need for additional diesel fuel supplies due to Russian attacks, adding:
“And we still need diesel.”

The discussions also covered potential joint development of gas fields in Ukraine. Zelenskyy pointed out the strategic value of storing gas in Ukraine's vast underground reservoirs, which are among the largest in Europe.

Future Plans for Cooperation

Further high-level meetings are planned, including with Romanian Prime Minister Ion-Marcel Ciolacu and a visit to an F-16 pilot training center. This visit signals the intent of both Ukraine and Romania to deepen collaboration in critical areas, particularly within the context of regional energy security and defense.

The summit between the Ukrainian and Romanian presidents reflects the growing importance of energy cooperation amid ongoing security challenges in the region. Talks on LNG and diesel supplies, alongside joint gas field development, highlight Ukraine's strategic role as a transit and storage hub for energy resources. The planned follow-up meetings between senior officials demonstrate both nations' commitment to strengthening bilateral relations during a global energy crisis.
