At Davos, Zelenskyy and Trump Agree on PAC-3 Missiles and Three-Way Talks.
US and Ukrainian Presidents Meet at Davos Forum
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump held a significant meeting on January 23 at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Their discussions centered on providing Ukraine with new PAC-3 missiles for air defense and broader regional security concerns. This meeting underscores the continued US strategic engagement in Eastern Europe's security landscape.
A key outcome was the decision to organize a trilateral meeting involving delegations from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. Planned for the United Arab Emirates, this meeting could represent a crucial step toward resolving the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. President Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of the PAC-3 systems, stating:
“PAC-3 against ballistic threats is exactly what we need. I am counting on a positive outcome.” — Volodymyr Zelenskyy
He also noted that security guarantees had been agreed upon and expressed hope for their formal signing. Zelenskyy added that while the American side had planned a trip to Moscow, it was significant that a three-way meeting of negotiators would follow in the UAE. “In any case, this is a step forward. We are not standing still,” the Ukrainian President remarked.
The Significance of International Backing
The Davos meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump highlights the critical role of international support for Ukraine amid heightened regional tensions. The focus on advanced air defense systems like the PAC-3 missiles demonstrates Ukraine's commitment to strengthening its defensive capabilities. The planned trilateral talks in the UAE may become a pivotal moment in the diplomatic process, aiming to de-escalate the situation and find pathways to end the conflict in Ukraine's east.
