Zelenskyy to Trump: Pressure Putin, Not Ukraine.
Ukrainian President's Statement
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that former U.S. President Donald Trump should focus his pressure on Russia, not Ukraine, to help end the war. Zelenskyy emphasized that while Americans want the conflict concluded, achieving this requires increased pressure on the Kremlin. These remarks followed Trump's own comments suggesting the need for a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The exchange highlights a fundamental divergence in approach to ending Europe's largest armed conflict since World War II.
Negotiations and Stances
In an interview with POLITICO and Welt, Zelenskyy affirmed his support for negotiations, stating:
'We need talks. We support them.'Trump, however, expressed frustration with Zelenskyy, asserting that the Ukrainian leader should 'get it together' and strike a deal. The former U.S. president believes Putin is prepared for such negotiations, noting:
'I think Putin is ready to make a deal.'
Zelenskyy added that the course of the war in Ukraine depends on U.S. actions, telling Trump: 'It depends on you, Mr. President.' He also acknowledged that, despite a desire for a peaceful settlement, relations between Ukraine and Russia remain deeply hostile: 'Of course, I think we hate each other.'
Recall that Russian forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022, initiating a prolonged military confrontation. In response to ongoing challenges, Zelenskyy confirmed the dispatch of teams of drone warfare specialists to the Persian Gulf, demonstrating Ukraine's active role in its own security. Trump, who is set to return to the White House in January 2025, continues to articulate his stance on the Ukrainian crisis and the potential for peace talks with Russia.
Zelenskyy's comments underscore the critical importance of international partner support in resolving the conflict, particularly from the United States, which holds significant influence. While Trump advocates for striking a deal with Russia, Ukraine's position remains firm: achieving peace first requires halting aggression from the Kremlin. This highlights the complexity of the negotiation process and the vital need for sustained international backing for Ukraine as the war continues.
