At Munich, Zelenskyy Insists Security Guarantees Must Come Before Any Peace Deal.
Munich Press Conference
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on February 14, 2023, that a document on security guarantees must be signed prior to concluding any peace agreement. He argued this is essential to provide Ukrainians with a genuine sense of security and is a critical step for building trust among all parties to the conflict. The Munich Security Conference is a key annual forum where global defense and diplomatic strategies are debated.
Zelenskyy made these remarks during a press conference at the 62nd Munich Security Conference, which is being held from February 13 to 15. The event has drawn around 50 heads of state and government, underscoring the high level of international focus on security issues. The President noted that the United States has been clear in expressing its position, emphasizing the desire for a swift peace.
'The United States openly tells us their position. That they want to achieve peace as soon as possible,' Zelenskyy said.
He further added, 'It is better to sign security guarantees first. This is better for Ukraine, for trust between all sides.' These comments reflect Ukraine's drive to secure stability and safety amid the ongoing war, which has reshaped European security architecture.
International Security Guarantees
President Zelenskyy's statement highlights the crucial importance of international security guarantees for Ukraine within the context of the ongoing conflict, a factor that could shape future peace negotiations. The participation of high-level officials from numerous countries at the Munich conference demonstrates that the issue of Ukrainian security remains a top priority on the international political agenda, with the rapid achievement of peace being a key goal for many nations.
