Zelenskyy Rejects Moscow Talks, Will Only Meet Putin on Neutral Ground.
Talks in Moscow Ruled Out
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has refused to travel to Moscow for negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelenskyy stated he cannot visit the capital of a nation that is the aggressor in the war, declaring:
“I cannot come to negotiations with Putin in Moscow — the capital of the country that is the aggressor in this war.”
Instead, he has proposed that any meetings be held only on the territory of neutral countries, excluding Russia and Belarus. It is important to note that in 2022, Belarus was an ally of Russia in its aggression against Ukraine. Zelenskyy also expressed hope that a cessation of hostilities by summer is possible, contingent on U.S. pressure on Russia. This stance reflects Ukraine's reliance on Western support to counter Russian military advances.
“We are ready to support U.S. proposals, to meet on any territory — America, Europe, neutral countries.”
The Ukrainian President's Stance
This position demonstrates the Ukrainian president's resolve on matters of security and diplomacy, as well as a desire to conduct negotiations under clear and secure conditions.
Zelenskyy's refusal to meet in Moscow underscores the continued tension in Ukraine-Russia relations. Opting for neutral venues may indicate Ukraine's aim to avoid legitimizing Russian aggression and its intent to involve international partners in the peace process. This decision could also shape the diplomatic efforts of the United States, which plays a crucial role in the ongoing conflict. The choice of location is a key diplomatic signal in a war where symbolism holds significant weight.
