Why Moshchun Became a Symbol of Kyiv’s Defense: Zelenskyy Honors Fallen Heroes.
Remembering Ukraine’s Brave Soldiers
According to UATV: On March 21, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy paid tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives defending the Kyiv region, particularly in the village of Moshchun. The ceremony took place at the 'Angels of Victory' memorial in the Bucha district of Kyiv Oblast, where flowers were laid in honor of the fallen.
In 2022, Ukrainian troops held their ground in Moshchun for over two weeks, fending off Russian forces during the invasion. On March 21, 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine successfully drove Russian troops out of the area entirely—a key milestone in the fight for Ukraine’s sovereignty. This small village became a critical flashpoint in the broader battle for the capital.
“I paid my respects to the soldiers who died during the defense and liberation of Moshchun. It is very important and right to honor the heroes who protected the Kyiv region and our entire nation. We remember and will always be grateful to our warriors for their feats and courage. They did the most essential thing—they gave our children the chance to live in a free Ukraine. We continue the fight to ensure this war ends justly.”

The memorial event coincided with the farewell ceremony for Patriarch Filaret, also held on March 21, 2023, at St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery in Kyiv. These concurrent events underscore the deep significance of remembering the heroism of Ukraine’s defenders and their role in preserving the nation’s independence.
The Importance of Honoring Heroes
Commemorating fallen soldiers has become a vital part of Ukraine’s national consciousness and identity amid the ongoing war. Ceremonies like the one in Moshchun help build a collective memory of the bravery and sacrifice of Ukrainian fighters. They remind society of the price of freedom and the need to unite around shared values in the struggle for peace and stability in the country.
