TikTok and Instagram Reels Cause Brain Rot: Evidence from Scientists.
According to ТСН: Excessive viewing of short video content on TikTok and Instagram Reels negatively affects users' cognitive functions, attention, and mental health.
An analysis of 98,299 participants from 71 studies found that the more time a person spends watching fleeting content, the worse their attention and inhibitory control becomes, making it difficult to focus on more complex tasks.
Loss of Sensitivity to Complex Tasks
Researchers explain that constant consumption of highly stimulating content leads to addiction. As a result, users lose their ability to engage in slower and more complex cognitive tasks, such as reading, problem-solving, or deep learning.
“Brain Rot” and Its Consequences
Scientists emphasize that this process can lead to
“brain rot”— a term describing the potential decline in intellectual capacity due to excessive engagement with trivial online content. Studies have also shown that short videos are associated with negative consequences for mental health and social life.
Reinforcement Cycle and Social Isolation
Continuous scrolling and receiving new, emotionally stimulating content trigger the release of dopamine, creating a reinforcement cycle. Addiction to online interactions can increase stress levels, as some users find it difficult to disconnect and regulate their emotions in real life.
Researchers also note that excessive consumption of short videos contributes to rising social isolation. Real-life interactions yield to passive digital activities, exacerbating feelings of loneliness and correlating with lower overall life satisfaction.
Impact on Cognitive Functions
Overall, the use of short videos is linked to a deterioration in cognitive functions (attention, inhibitory control, language, memory, and working memory) and most indicators of mental health.
It is important to note that many people resort to harmful habits such as reading during transportation, binge-watching shows in the dark, and consuming alcohol to relax, which can negatively impact health.
As the autumn season begins, many Ukrainians complain of deteriorating eyesight, once again sparking discussions about the myth of the super-benefit of beta-carotene.
Thus, the consequences of excessive consumption of short content are significant at all levels — from cognitive activity to social life. In the fast-paced modern world, it is important to choose quality content and manage screen time. This will help maintain mental health and improve overall well-being.
