Dmytro Khiliuk on the absurd situation after his release

According to inkorr.com: Journalist Dmytro Khiliuk, who recently returned from Russian captivity, shared an unusual story that happened to him after his release. Thanks to the 'Reserve+' program, he found out that he was being sought as a 'draft evader', as he had not managed to update his details before the set deadline in 2024.

During his captivity, Khiliuk had no opportunity to keep up with changes in the legislation. Returning home, he found himself in a complicated situation, as there was a likelihood of his detention under the law. Fortunately, this issue was quickly resolved, and he was taken off the wanted list.

After his return, Khiliuk undergoes a medical examination due to issues with blood pressure and pulse that arose during his imprisonment. He is also receiving assistance from a psychologist. The journalist's personal life suffered significant losses in April 2022 when he was abducted by Russian troops. Initially, he was held in an occupied territory and then transferred to Russia.

Here is what he said about his experiences in captivity:

“The hardest part was the feeling of vacuum - the complete absence of any information. Not only about Ukraine but about everything in general.”

Khiliuk's experience highlights not only personal drama but also the absurdity of the situation faced by many Ukrainians after returning from captivity. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of human rights support and adequate treatment and rehabilitation for those who have experienced traumatic events of war. The situation faced by Khiliuk once again underscores the necessity of adapting the legal system to the realities of modernity. Whether the state can respond promptly to similar cases in the future remains a pressing question for society.
