Indonesian Woman Faints During 140-Lash Public Flogging for Extramarital Sex and Alcohol.
Punishment in Aceh
According to TSN.ua: A man and a woman in Indonesia's Aceh province were each sentenced to 140 lashes for having intimate relations outside of marriage and consuming alcohol. The public flogging was carried out in a community park, where authorities administered 100 lashes for the extramarital sex and an additional 40 for alcohol consumption. During the punishment, the woman lost consciousness and required urgent transport to an ambulance. Aceh is the only Indonesian province permitted to implement Islamic law, known as Sharia.
Aceh's Special Autonomy
Aceh was granted special autonomy in 2001, allowing it to enforce laws based on Islamic code. The couple subjected to this harsh penalty were among six individuals punished for violating these norms on that day. Acehnese authorities continue to apply strict measures to uphold their interpretation of tradition, a practice that generates mixed reactions both domestically and internationally.
Muhammad Rizal, a local official, confirmed the couple received the 140 lashes: 100 for extramarital sex and 40 for alcohol use. This case underscores the persistence of corporal punishment in the region, despite sustained objections from human rights groups.
This incident reflects the complex situation in Aceh, where strict laws derived from Islamic jurisprudence remain a source of controversy.
Amid global changes and increasing pressure from international human rights organizations, the issue of human rights compliance in the region remains pertinent. Such incidents can also fuel further societal polarization in Indonesia, highlighting a need for deeper analysis and dialogue among the nation's diverse cultural and religious groups.
