A 25-Year-Old Chinese Woman Pays Just $30 a Month to Live in a Retirement Home.
Building Social Bonds in Suzhou
According to TSN.ua: In Suzhou, China, 25-year-old Zhang Jin has been living at Yiyang Senior House for over two years, paying 200 yuan (about $30) a month for the chance to interact with elderly residents. She moved to Suzhou after graduating from university in Jiangxi province and became the only volunteer left in the program after other participants left.
The Value of Volunteering
Yiyang Senior House has a capacity of more than 1,500 people. As China’s population ages, people over 60 now make up nearly one-fifth of the country’s total population.
Zhang shared:
“I don’t know anyone in this city”– a statement that highlights her desire to build new relationships and find companionship in an unfamiliar environment.
Zhang Jin’s story underscores the growing importance of social connections in an aging society. With more elderly people needing support and companionship, youth volunteering can play a key role in improving quality of life in senior homes. It also points to the need for programs that encourage young people to engage with older adults, helping to reduce isolation for both groups.
