November 28: the Day of St. Stephen the New and Folk Omens

According to ТСН: Tomorrow, November 28, in the Orthodox calendar is the memorial day of St. Stephen the New. Stephen was born around 715 in Constantinople to a pious Christian family that prayed for a son for a long time. After his birth, he was dedicated to God in the Church of Blachernae (Holy Virgin).

Life and Monasticism

At the age of 16, Stephen began his studies under the guidance of Elder John, who lived in a remote place on Mount Auxentius (the area of Bithynia). For more than 15 years, he learned about monastic life and asceticism. After John's death, Stephen continued his life as a hermit in a cave.

Over time, other monks began to gather around his cave, and Stephen became the abbot of the monastery. At about 42 years of age, he left the monastery and went to a stricter solitude, but even there, other monks began to visit him.

Persecution and Martyrdom

Stephen lived during the iconoclast controversy in Byzantium. The emperor, known for his support of iconoclasm, did not recognize the decision of the Iconoclast Council. From 760, Stephen began to be persecuted for his faith and active opposition to the iconoclasts.

He was accused of unkind relationships and illegal monastic tonsuring of George Syncletus. The emperor sent soldiers to arrest him: first, he ended up in a monastery in Chrysolite, and later he was exiled to the island of Proconnesus.

After about two years of exile, Stephen was transferred to a prison in Constantinople. A year into his imprisonment, he was sentenced to death: he was tortured and ultimately killed. After his death, one of his followers managed to rescue his skull and take it to the monastery.

The Church Feast on November 28 – The Memorial Day of St. Martyr Irenarchus

St. Irenarchus lived during the time of persecutions of Christians under Emperor Maximinus and observed the steadfastness of the believers. He was impressed by the courage of seven Christian women who were suffering for their faith, and having believed, he publicly confessed Jesus Christ. His path also turned out to be difficult; at first, he was thrown into a swamp, then into a fiery furnace, but he remained unharmed. Eventually, he was sentenced to death.
