The Holy Great Martyr Theodore Stratelates
Theodore Stratelates was born in Euchaita, a city in Asia Minor located in modern-day Turkey. He served as a military commander (stratelates) in the city of Heraclea. When the Roman Emperor Licinius commanded citizens to offer sacrifices to pagan idols, Theodore openly defied the order. His actions, which included destroying pagan statues, led to his arrest. He endured severe torture, was crucified, and ultimately beheaded, demonstrating his unwavering Christian faith until death.
The Holy Prophet Zechariah
Also remembered on February 8th is the Prophet Zechariah, who lived in the 6th century BC. His prophetic ministry occurred during the reign of the Persian King Darius I, around 520 BC. Zechariah was a priest from the lineage of Iddo and was deeply respected by his people. Church tradition holds that he was martyred between the temple and the altar, underscoring his total devotion and sacrificial service to God.
