EU prepares plan to counter Trump: four ways to stop US claims on Greenland

According to ТСН: US President Donald Trump has expressed his desire for the country to own Greenland. However, Greenland is part of Denmark, and most locals do not seek to join the US. Europeans are concerned, as this strategy resembles the imperial methods of Vladimir Putin.

Politicians can no longer ignore the rhetoric of the American leader and are ramping up efforts to develop plans to stop him.

“We must be prepared for a direct confrontation with Trump. He has an aggressive attitude, and we must be ready,” noted an EU diplomat familiar with current discussions.

Option 1: find a compromise

Negotiations could be a way for Trump to reach a compromise while saving face for Denmark and Greenland. A former high-ranking NATO official suggests that the Alliance become a mediator in negotiations between Greenland, Denmark, and the US, which could help avoid conflict.

Option 2: offer Greenland a huge sum of money

The EU and Denmark are trying to convince the residents of Greenland that they can offer them better conditions. According to the European Commission's plans, Brussels intends to more than double spending on Greenland to keep its residents away from American influence.

Option 3: retaliatory economic measures

The EU has a powerful political tool to deter Trump – the 'trade bazooka', which allows for measures in response to trade discrimination.

Option 4: deployment of troops

If the US decides to seize Greenland by force, Europeans are unlikely to prevent it. Denmark may be obligated to respond to such an attack under legal norms. Although Danish forces would likely be unable to withstand a US invasion, they could serve as a deterrent.

Moreover, Trump and his team are discussing several scenarios for acquiring Greenland, including the possible use of American armed forces. The White House press secretary stated that for Trump, this is a matter of national security and strategic significance.

At the same time, Senator Ruben Gallego announced his intention to initiate a resolution banning any US military actions regarding Greenland, emphasizing the importance of avoiding Trump's impulsive decisions in international affairs.

Thus, the situation around Greenland is becoming increasingly tense. Trump's actions raise concerns in Europe, and countries are trying to find options to avoid escalation and maintain peace in the region. Negotiations and attempts to find a compromise may be the only way out of this complex situation.
