Psychologists Reveal Signs of Dark Personality Traits in Messages: What to Look Out For.
According to ТСН: Your communication style in messaging apps can reveal more about you than you think. Modern research in digital psychology shows that sentence structure, punctuation choices, and message-sending speed reflect your personality.
Researchers note that certain writing styles can help identify so-called "dark traits" of character, such as Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy.
According to psychologist Charlotte Entwistle from Liverpool University, everyday word usage can indicate a personality disorder.
"Whether it's a quick text message, a long email, a casual chat with a friend, or an online comment, the choice of words people use subtly reveals deeper patterns in how they think, feel, and relate to others."
For example, frequent use of swear words in communication can be a worrying sign. Regularly expressing hatred towards various things also raises red flags.
"Those with dark personality traits typically use more hostile, negative language, employing many swear words and expressions that evoke anger, such as 'hate' or 'angry'."
Dark personality traits are combined in the concept of the "Dark Triad," which includes:
Machiavellianism - manipulation, cynicism, selfishness, and deceit;
Narcissism - grandiosity, pride, selfishness, and lack of empathy;
Psychopathy - antisocial behavior, impulsivity, heartlessness, and ruthlessness;
Sadism - cruelty for pleasure or dominance, aimed at causing suffering.
Entwistle emphasizes that many people may have less noticeable difficulties, such as mood swings, negativity, and rigid thinking.
Observing linguistic patterns can reveal problems even before they manifest in behavior.
"Observing these patterns helps us better understand others, support those who may be struggling, and safely navigate social life - online and offline - with greater awareness."
For instance, the personal letters of serial killer Jack Unterweger demonstrated a high level of self-centered language and a detached emotional tone.
Entwistle highlights the importance of recognizing hostility and extreme negativity in ordinary situations.
"For example, noticeably large usage of self-referential terms (I, me), angry words (hate, angry), and swear words in combination with a lack of terminology indicating social connection (we, us, our) may be significant linguistic patterns to pay attention to."
Thus, studying communication styles can become an important tool for understanding people’s inner worlds. These studies open new horizons in psychology as they allow not only to identify potential issues but also to provide timely support to those in need. In the future, this may have a serious impact on our perception of social interactions both online and in real life.
