Science has found an easy way to fall asleep faster in winter: the secret lies in warm feet.
According to ТСН: As the cold weather arrives, many people start experiencing difficulties in falling asleep and a decline in sleep quality. Low room temperatures hinder the body's relaxation, but scientists have found a simple and free solution to this problem.
The secret to good sleep lies in warming your feet. Biomedical sciences lecturer Gareth Nye states: warm feet become a key signal for the brain that it’s time to rest.
A 2018 study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology confirmed this effect: people who slept in socks fell asleep 7.5 minutes faster, slept 32 minutes longer, and woke up less frequently at night.
When the feet warm up, the blood vessels in the skin dilate, and the body better releases heat. This helps lower the overall body temperature – a natural signal for falling asleep.
In contrast, cold feet force the body to activate the 'alert' mode: blood vessels constrict, and the body retains heat for vital organs, making the process of falling asleep more difficult.
How to properly use the 'warm feet' method
Experts advise:
choose loose socks made from natural fabrics to avoid disrupting circulation;
if sleeping in socks is uncomfortable – take a warm footbath before bed or place a heating pad in the bed;
keep the room cool – the optimal sleeping temperature is 16–18°C, but the feet should be warm.
Many also associate insomnia with excessive coffee consumption or stress. However, new research suggests that ordinary plastic items surrounding us may also contribute to sleep disturbances.
Therefore, to improve sleep quality, it’s worth paying attention to simple things, such as the condition of your feet and the temperature in the room. Warmed feet can become the key to peaceful sleep, especially during the winter months. By focusing on such seemingly minor details, one can significantly enhance overall well-being and restore energy for a new day.
