1397th day of the war: what holidays Ukrainians will celebrate on December 22.
According to ТСН: 1397th day of the war in Ukraine.
What holiday is tomorrow
On December 22, believers celebrate the Day of Remembrance of Saint Anastasia the Great Martyr. Anastasia was born in Rome in the late 3rd century into a wealthy family. Her father was a pagan, while her mother was a secret Christian who raised her daughter in the Christian faith from childhood. At her father's request, the saint was married to a noble but cruel pagan who did not allow her to practice Christianity and committed acts of cruelty against her. However, Anastasia remained faithful to Christ. After her husband's death, she distributed part of her inheritance to the poor and devoted herself to serving persecuted Christians. The saint was arrested during the persecutions under Emperor Diocletian and eventually executed around 304 AD, being tied to poles over a fire.
On December 22, Ukrainians also celebrate Ukraine's Diplomatic Service Workers' Day. This holiday was established by a decree of the President of Ukraine in 2005. The date was chosen deliberately: on December 22, 1917, the General Secretariat for International Affairs of the Ukrainian People's Republic was created, which became the first national body responsible for the state's foreign policy. This moment is considered the beginning of modern Ukrainian diplomatic service.
In addition, December 22 is also celebrated as Energy Workers' Day. This holiday was established during the Soviet era, but continues to be celebrated in independent Ukraine to honor specialists whose work is crucial for the stable functioning of the state. The chosen date emphasizes the importance of energy during the shortest daylight days. Energy is the foundation of economic and national security. The labor of energy workers means light in homes, warmth in hospitals, operation of businesses, and preservation of communication.
Moreover, December 22 is celebrated as Short Person's Day. This unofficial yet warm and ironic holiday draws attention to the diversity of human bodies, supports self-irony, self-acceptance, and overcoming stereotypes related to height. Short Person's Day arose in response to stereotypes that tall stature is an advantage. However, height is just one of the physical characteristics that does not determine talent, intellect, charisma, or life success.
These holidays, though different in content, reflect important aspects of Ukrainian culture and history. From honoring the memory of saints to the apostles of international diplomacy and energy, these days highlight the diversity of our nation. They encourage us not only to remember the past but also to honor the people who shape our society today.
