Explosive-laden drones sold as cheap Shahed knockoffs found on Alibaba marketplace.
What we know about the lethal weapons listed on Alibaba
According to TSN.ua: Drones advertised on Alibaba as civilian equipment for agricultural work or logistics deliveries have been discovered to possess features matching those of combat unmanned aerial vehicles. According to their technical documentation, certain models can carry an explosive payload of up to 2 kg over a distance of 100 km, raising serious concerns about potential misuse. These devices are low-cost imitations of the Shahed-136 drones that Russia has been actively deploying in its war against Ukraine.
During a large-scale attack on March 24, Russia used Shahed-type UAVs to strike Ukrainian targets, including a church in Lviv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described Russia’s use of Iranian-made Shahed drones—modified by Moscow—to hit civilian sites as 'an absolute perversion.'
After the listings were flagged, Alibaba removed the drone offers and banned the seller accounts that had posted them. These actions demonstrate the platform’s commitment to enforcing its policies and preventing the sale of dangerous goods that could compromise security. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in regulating the trade of dual-use technologies that can be repurposed for military operations.
The discovery of drones with combat capabilities on Alibaba underscores the difficulties in controlling the global trade of technologies that pose risks to civilian safety. It also raises questions about international efforts to curb the illicit trafficking of weapons and related equipment. Alibaba’s response may reflect an attempt to address public pressure and uphold international security standards.
