A Third Nipple Under Her Arm: A New Mother's Postpartum Discovery Explained.
Jasmine Mamea's Story of Supernumerary Breast Tissue
According to TSN.ua: American woman Jasmine Mamea has shared an unusual postpartum experience involving the development of extra breast tissue. While in the hospital, a lactation consultant discovered a third nipple under Mamea's arm. A video where she recounts this discovery has garnered over 3.7 million views on TikTok, resonating with many viewers. Supernumerary nipples, while uncommon, are a known anatomical variation that can become more prominent during pregnancy due to hormonal changes.
Pregnancy and Physiological Changes
Mamea explained that this additional breast tissue likely developed during her pregnancy. She noted that in some cases, such tissue can become swollen and painful if a woman goes too long without nursing. Mamea breastfed her first child for a year and a half. She added that milk production from this extra tissue is possible, though she has no plans to test it.
In her video, Mamea stated that having extra breast tissue is not exceptionally rare. She expressed surprise at learning about her third nipple immediately after giving birth:
"Telling me I have an extra boob in my armpit before I've even had my first postpartum pee is just diabolical." — Jasmine Mamea
Furthermore, Mamea was firm about not using a breast pump on the area: "If you think I'm going to put a breast pump right here and pump milk from my armpit, you are out of your mind, because no." She also shared concerns about potential surgery: "I'm afraid the only way out is surgery, so when I'm done having kids, I can surgically remove it."
Despite the oddity, Mamea views her situation with humor, believing that "a third boob, a fourth boob—that's actually the best-case scenario of all the medical body changes that happen before and after having a baby."
This story highlights that supernumerary breast tissue, while rare, is not unique and can occur in women during and after pregnancy. It sparks discussions about the wide range of physiological changes a woman's body can undergo and challenges social and cultural stereotypes surrounding breastfeeding and the female form. Mamea's viral video has found an audience because many women see their own maternal experiences and feelings reflected in her candid account.
