Governor Confirms Strike on Cheboksary's VNIIR-Progress Plant.
VNIIR-Progress Plant Targeted in Attack
According to TSN.ua: The regional governor has confirmed a series of explosions occurred in Cheboksary on February 18. Preliminary reports indicate no serious damage or casualties have been recorded. Eyewitnesses report at least three unmanned aerial vehicles falling in the city, as well as smoke seen on 9th Pyatiletka Avenue.
The VNIIR-Progress enterprise specializes in manufacturing "Kometa" antennas for the Russian military and also produces satellite GNSS receivers and antennas for GLONASS, GPS, and Galileo systems. This facility in Cheboksary has been targeted in previous attacks, which are part of a pattern of strikes on Russian defense industry sites. The plant was previously attacked on:
- June 9
- July 5
- November 28 of last year
Details of the incident are currently being clarified, but information about the consequences of the attack remains minimal at this time. Local residents are monitoring the situation, and law enforcement agencies are conducting an investigation.
This strike on the VNIIR-Progress plant highlights the increasing risks to strategic facilities involved in military technology within Russia, a situation exacerbated by regional tensions.
Given the previous incidents, it is plausible such attacks may form part of a broader trend aimed at destabilizing production supporting military infrastructure. It is important to monitor subsequent investigations and the response of the authorities to these events.
