Russia attacked the nuclear power plant: why winter power outages will remain

According to ТСН: The massive shelling of Ukraine's energy infrastructure on December 23 was aimed at disconnecting important nuclear power plants from the overall energy grid.

Enemy Strategy: Isolation of Nuclear Power Plants and Breaking Ties with the EU

According to analysts, the main goal of the attack was to isolate the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear power plants. In addition, the facilities of the operator 'Ukrenergo' were hit. Russia aimed not only to limit internal electricity distribution but also to sever connections of the Ukrainian energy system with those of other European countries.

Despite the seriousness of the threat, experts note that the enemy was unable to fully implement its plans. However, they urge not to be overly optimistic about the timing of restoration.

'The expected result for the enemy was not achieved - this can be stated. But at the same time, when there are bombastic statements from government officials that everything will be quickly repaired and restored and 'everything will be fine', it should be understood: this will not happen. It is not worth hoping that everything will return to pre-war conditions and there will be no disconnection schedules from the New Year,' emphasized the expert.

Winter Forecast: Schedules Will Remain Part of Everyday Life

The expert explains that repair work will only partially stabilize the system. Despite the heroic efforts of energy specialists, the power deficit and the need for restrictions will remain relevant throughout the winter.

He also emphasized that the country’s energy system has demonstrated its resilience. Each such attack, despite the destruction, allows specialists to gain unique experience and introduce new protection methods that reduce the consequences of future strikes. In the expert's view, the current state of affairs is not the worst possible scenario.

It is recalled that early in the morning on December 23, Russian troops began a massive attack on Ukraine, using strike drones and rockets of various types. The main targets of the attacks were energy infrastructure facilities. Emergency power outages were introduced in several regions. Unfortunately, as a result of the Russian attacks, there are casualties and injuries.

As a result, Ukraine's nuclear power plants reduced their generation. The Ministry of Energy emphasized that this is a violation of nuclear safety on the part of the aggressor state.

Thus, the situation with electricity supply will remain critical given the continued aggression from Russia. Despite the efforts of energy specialists, disconnection schedules will still be part of the everyday life of Ukrainians. It is important for all structures to remain prepared for unforeseen strikes and continue working on increasing the country’s energy independence.
