Drone Attack on the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

According to TSN.ua: Last year, a Russian drone assault inflicted damage on the New Safe Confinement structure at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, raising serious concerns about nuclear safety across Europe. Experts are worried because this breach could compromise the stability of the facility and endanger the broader region. The attack targeted the critical protective dome designed to contain radioactive materials.

The New Safe Confinement—a vital component for ensuring safety at the site—was hit, prompting the installation of a protective shield over the largest hole to address the immediate consequences. While no radiation leak occurred following the drone strikes, the situation remains precarious. Corrosion of the ventilation system is expected to begin before the end of this decade, adding urgency to the need for repairs.

Aftermath of the Attack and Expert Assessments

According to specialists, the loss of airtightness now hinders the safe dismantling of the old sarcophagus covering the destroyed reactor.

Serhiy Tarakanov emphasizes that 'without a sealed shell, the entire system will fail.'
The intense radiation fields directly above the ruined reactor create a severe technical challenge. Additionally, seismic shocks and rocket overflights pose a risk of structural collapse, further elevating the nuclear safety threat.

Phase two of repairing the New Safe Confinement is estimated to cost between 5 and 10 million euros. In early October 2023, the main opening of the structure was covered with a protective screen, marking an important step toward improved safety. International partners estimate the full restoration cost at over 500 million euros, while the international cooperation fund for Chernobyl currently holds more than 70 million euros.

Oleksandr Titarchuk notes that 'this is a continental threat that is being ignored.'
This highlights the urgent need for global attention to the issue.

The attack on the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant underscores not only the importance of physical security at the site but also the necessity of international collaboration to maintain nuclear safety in the region. Damage to the containment structure could have severe consequences not just for Ukraine but for all of Europe. It is critical that the international community responds more actively to these challenges and provides the resources required for recovery. Resolving the issue demands immediate action, as the situation remains critical.
