Russia's Attack on Ukraine's Energy Sector: IAEA Makes a Statement.
The Russian attack has led to a loss of electrical power at Ukrainian nuclear power plants
Due to the Russian attack on the morning of November 17, the energy infrastructure of Ukraine was affected. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported a decrease in electrical power at Ukrainian nuclear power plants. This was announced by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
According to the IAEA, this poses a threat to nuclear safety. The Russian attack is targeting substations that are essential for the reliable operation of the Khmelnytsky, Rivne and Southern Ukrainian NPPs.
The main lines from four substations were disconnected, leading to unstable energy supply.
Of the nine operational reactors, only two are working at full capacity, while the rest are operating at 40-90% of the norm.
Rafael Grossi emphasized the importance of stability in the energy grid for the safety of nuclear facilities. He also stressed the need to adhere to seven basic principles of nuclear safety, including ensuring a reliable external energy supply for NPPs.
According to President Zelensky's report, in the morning of November 17, Russia launched a massive missile strike, during which about 120 missiles and 90 drones were launched. As a result, more than 140 aerial targets were destroyed. Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko reported that Russian terrorists are attacking the energy system facilities throughout Ukraine, and emergency power outages have been implemented.
Additionally, Russia launched a missile strike on Rivne, hitting a critical infrastructure facility, according to the head of the regional administration.
As a result of the shelling in the Pechersk district of Kyiv, a residential building caught fire. A woman who was injured by a fragment of a UAV has been hospitalized. In the apartment on the 4th floor, the wall and ceiling were damaged, - said Vitaliy Klitschko.
