Ukrainian Nuclear Plants May Require Up to 36 Hours for Full Recovery After Grid Failure.
Ukrainian Power Grid Failure: Nuclear Plant Restart Could Take Up to 36 Hours
According to TSN.ua: A major failure in Ukraine's power grid on January 31 has forced an urgent effort to restore generation at the nation's nuclear power plants. Energy experts estimate that stabilizing the grid and fully restarting nuclear generation will take between 24 and 36 hours. This incident highlights the ongoing strain on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which has been a repeated target during the ongoing conflict.
The emergency was triggered by a technical fault recorded at 10:42 AM. This disruption caused the shutdown of a 400 kV power line between Romania and Moldova, as well as a critical 750 kV line connecting western and central regions of Ukraine. Consequently, emergency blackout schedules were implemented in Kyiv, and the Kyiv, Zhytomyr, and Kharkiv regions.
Serhiy Nahorniak noted that restarting nuclear power units typically requires about a day on average. Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the energy system has all the necessary resources for recovery work. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed that the blackouts were indeed caused by a technological failure.
State of the Energy System
The situation in the energy grid remains under control, with relevant services working to restore stability.
This accident underscores the vulnerability of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, especially amid contemporary challenges.
— Energy Expert
Restoring nuclear plant operation is critically important for ensuring the country's electricity supply, particularly during the winter period when energy demand peaks. Observing the development of the situation, it is vital for the relevant services to respond promptly to similar incidents in the future to avoid widespread power outages.
